Weighing In: 2010

As we enter 2010 with health and fitness resolutions in mind, what kind of bathroom scales will be underfoot?

The types of scales available to consumers today are astounding. There’s a scale that will tweet your weight to everyone via Twitter. There’s the doormat scale. And the scale designed as a box of chocolates.

There are scales that speak, scales that connect to wi-fi networks, and scales that pass for fine furniture.

In short, anyone entering this new decade with a resolve to closely monitor weight and fitness has countless options — from humble, low-tech analog scales to scales soaring sky high on function and design.

Soehnle scales by Leifheit are world-renowned for reliability and futuristic features – and a fascinating history that spans 132 years of innovation, including:

  • The world’s first diet computer,
  • The world’s first personal solar scale, and
  • The world’s first solar kitchen scale

Today, Leifheit offers nearly two dozen Soehnle personal scales, including the 2009 Housewares Award finalist, the Body Balance Slim FT5.

Indeed, something for everyone in 2010.

Zen and the Art of a Bathroom Scale
The story behind the Sohenle 2009 Housewares Design Award Finalist

Can a high-tech personal fitness scale possess both beauty and brains?

Leifheit set out to meet this challenge. The result? The Soehnle Body Balance Slim FT5, a scale that enjoyed a hearty reception in the marketplace and was honored as a 2009 Housewares Design Award finalist.

The goal behind the creation of this scale was to pack as many comprehensive formulas and reading abilities as possible into one easy-to-use scale, while maintaining the ultimate ease and design elegance.

Soehnle scales have long been lauded as accurate, simple, slim, easy-to-clean, design-savvy additions to the modern home.  Embracing innovation along the way, the 141-year-old company has incorporated advanced technology with each model engineered.

What makes the Soehnle Body Balance Slim FT5 scale so special?

First, the technology. Of course, the Body Balance Slim FT5 possesses the accuracy in weighing for which Soehnle is world-famous; but this scale also has the ability to determine body fat, body water, muscle mass and energy consumption (kcal) through Body Impedance Analysis (BIA) technology. It then goes the extra step with an athelete mode that offers helpful recommendations based on these measurements (drink more water, exercise recommended, etc.). A trend display permits long-term tracking of body values. The scale stores the data and automatically recognizes up to eight individual users (max. load capacity: 330 LB/150 KG).

As for the stunning design of the Soehnle Body Balance Slim FT5, design team member Markus Dombrowsky explains, “Soehnle has always developed scales with the design, zeitgeist and form in mind. This philosophy fell into alignment with observing trends in modern lifestyle, involving less clutter, new materials and a focus on wellness, Zen and organic forms.”

Leifheit is no stranger to the esteemed Housewares Design Award. The Soehnle Comfort F5 Body Balance Scale won “Best in Category” in the 2007 Housewares Design Awards.

The suggested retail price for the Soehnle Body Balance Slim FT5 is $110; it is available through select retail stores and online at www.leifheitus.com.

Modern, German-designed Essentials for a Traditional Oktoberfest Celebration

pretzelLeifheit has been a household name in Germany for 50 years now.

Elke Roehrig, German native and vice president of Leifheit International USA, shares her memories of some authentic Oktoberfest food traditions …

Sausage: Bavarian veal sausage (not smoked, contains parsley, take off the skin before digging in) is enjoyed with sweet mustard. Beef or pork sausages are served with Dijon mustard and/or freshly ground horseradish.

Sauerkraut: Buy loose or canned sauerkraut, slice an onion in very thin slices and briefly sauté with butter  in a saucepan. Add the sauerkraut, some caraway seeds, and a little dry white wine if desired, then heat.

Soft pretzels: Today, most people buy frozen ones that they pop into the oven for a few minutes.

And, of course … Beer, beer, beer and more beer!

You are all set! Blast the brass music, enjoy the beer carriages pulled by
decorated horses, and wear your “dirndl” or “janker.” Enjoy!

And the hardworking, unsung heroes behind these Oktoberfest feasts?

Canning is Cool Again!

LeifheitjarsAugust 2009 (Melville NY) Amazon.com is rolling out a bumper crop of books on canning and preserving foods. The New York Times ran a hefty story on canning. Newspapers across the country are featuring articles and canning recipes for everything from pickles to plum jam. Online, food-focused Twitter posts and blog entries are packed with food preservation ideas and information. Indeed, a major “canvolution” underway. And Canning Across America is stirring up the canning excitement with a nationwide kickoff August 29-30.

As summer heats up and fresh produce is harvested, a growing number of home gardeners and fervent farmers-market shoppers will be carrying out the age-old tradition of canning – many for the first time. Their motivation? To have wholesome or locally grown foods available in their own kitchens during off-seasons; to save money on store-bought staples; and to share the bounty with personal, flavorful gifts from the kitchen.

This robust trend is driving up the demand for durable food preserving equipment such as pressure cookers, slow cookers and a variety of kitchen tools and airtight storage systems. The good news for consumers is that these investments are generally a great value, delivering years of reliable service.

Leifheit International USA is among the companies seeing an increase in sales tied to canning interest. Leifheit’s product line of high-quality cherry stoners, funnels, strainers and uniquely shaped canning jars have certainly gained attention. Celebrity food stylists and gourmet cooks have been among those choosing to preserve their culinary creations in Leifheit’s classy European glass jars.

Hottest housewares trends for 2010?

New Leifheit USA Products are Trend-Ready!

Melville, N.Y.- Earlier this year, at the International Home + Housewares Show in Chicago, experts revealed the hottest trends in housewares for 2010. Buyers looking to tap into these trends will be thrilled with the new products that will be available at the Leifheit International USA booth (North Hall 3853) at the Gourmet Housewares Show in San Francisco, Aug. 8-10, 2009.

Leifheit USA has long catered to creative and culinary types. It just so happens that the quality, durability and design features for which Leifheit is famous are now right on-target with 2010 trends. The following are a few examples of new Leifheit USA products (there are more than 100 new this year!) that cater to the demands and desires of today’s customers.

Trend: Burrowing
People are spending more time at home, cooking and entertaining in their own kitchens – and having fun doing it. Many are taking the opportunity to practice and perfect their culinary skills to impress their friends and family.
•    Leifheit USA has two new extensive lines of kitchen tools: the 29-piece Proline and 42-piece Comfortline. Both contain all the kitchen essentials – and more than a few luxury gadgets. (SMRP ranging from $6-50 per item).
•    Leifheit’s Soehnle kitchen scales are becoming increasingly popular among home chefs who recognize a scale’s importance for cooking and baking accuracy as well as for monitoring nutritional value. Leifheit’s new scales of note: The Flip, a clever round scale (comes in silver and white) with sensor keys and the ability to measure both liquid and dry ingredients (SMRP $40); the Olympia, a compact scale with a generous weighing platform (SMRP $35); and the Olympia Plus, the Olympia plus a high-quality bowl (SMRP $40).

Trend:  Whimsical and Retro Designs; and Color!

From tabletop settings to appliances, people are looking for uplifting colors and designs to brighten up the kitchens where they are now spending more time.
•    Leifheit has lively colors aplenty. The notebook-slim, glass-top Soehnle Page kitchen scale (SMRP $40) is now available in red, green, orange, yellow, blue and silver (plus a modern black and white design). And the Soehnle Retro scale (SMRP $120) is a proven attention-grabber in shiny candy-apple red.
•    Bright red also accents the gleaming white Comfortline collection of kitchen tools and gadgets.
•    The plump and popular Columbus insulated carafe (SMRP $30) now comes in a rainbow of hues: translucent yellow, green and turquoise; opaque blue, red and white. The sleek new Tondo carafe (SMRP $20) also comes in opaque blue, red and white. The new Bolero carafe (SMRP $20) takes a slightly different approach with deep, frosty shades of coffee, black, dark blue and white. All carafes keep beverages hot or cold for 12 hours.

Trend: Living within Means
More and more people are saving money in the kitchen by gardening, shopping at farmers markets, buying in bulk – and preparing and preserving foods themselves (and sharing preserved foods in pretty jars as gifts).
•    Leifheit has a selection of uniquely shaped canning jars in a full range of sizes (SMRP ranging from $15-23 per set of 6). The jazzy design of these jars is not only pretty, but also practical; the marquis shape saves space.
•    Leifheit’s 2009 catalog is packed with a variety of kitchen tools that make food prep and preservation easy and affordable, including apple corers, micro-cut graters and slicers, choppers, cherry stoners, strainers and funnels.

Indeed, Leifheit USA is ready for the Gourmet Housewares Show — and to meet the demand created by these hot trends.
